Where can I find a wholesale flower shop in Atlanta, that doesn't require a business license?

I live in atlanta and I want to make my own Boutonnieres , bouquets and corsages. Where should I go? Or is there a place I can go to do it for cheap. I have 8 brides maids and 8 groomsmans, thats why i can't pay the regular prices on the flowers. I am doing a brown and pink wedding. So I am looking for roses or carnations in diffrent types of pink and white. Any ideas, anyone. Thanks

Where can I find a wholesale flower shop in Atlanta, that doesn't require a business license?
i would call or go to some grocery stores. they have floral dpts and are pretty cheap. they can either hook you up with a deal or suggest a way to get what you are looking for.

since you have a large bridal party they might be able to order flowers at cost and sell them to you at their price, or just over.

you can try to call the dpt of commerce or chamber of commerce... they might have info on wholesale flower markets in your area.

you might also call a bridal consultant and just ask if they know of any places. hopefully they will be nice and tell you and not be all sorry you need to pay me for my info/sources
Reply:If you are not using fresh flowers, then I would go on the internet type in wholesale flowers. I did this for a banquet in February and ordered flowers for the centerpieces. A lot of these sites also sell the bouquet holders, ribbons just about everything you need for your wedding party. Their prices are great and less then what you would pay at store. Also a lot of these places have free shipping if you order a certain dollar amount.
Reply:I don't know about wholesale, but where I live, there are public markets that have lots of flower vendors.

I'd look at these sites, and see if they have vendors who sell flowers, and if they will help you out in any way.

Good luck, and Congratulations!
Reply:I'm not sure about Atlanta, but here in LA (and also in NYC), the wholesale flower market is open to the public only one day a week at a certain time. Call the shop and see if they open to the public anytime.
Reply:Not sure specifically about the Atlanta area, but I did just discover that you can go to samsclub.com and order bulk flowers wholesale though the website and have them delivered straight to your home for a really reasonable price! That's what I'm doing :)

Which are the tools necessary in a Flower Shop?

College Project?

Which are the tools necessary in a Flower Shop?
In an actual Flower Shop? well I owned one for 10 years and just about any tool you own can be used in a flower shop, just depends on how creative you want to be :)

The main tools are: a sharp floral scissors for trimming your flowers, a scissors for cutting fine wire, a sharp scissors for cutting ribbon. A hammer, pliers, and saw have came in handy when needing to put items together for a creative piece or two. Other items would be a 6" knife for cutting foam, a low temp glue pot, a measuring cup for your floral food when mixing in quantity, hand wire cutter (side cutter) for cutting the wires in a silk flower stem. These are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. Have fun and be creative. Better yet don't forget Mom on Mothers Day if you are working in a flower shop :)
Reply:Which aren't tools. Is this an Englush project?
Reply:shears,scissors sponges,flowerpots,florist.
Reply:Trowel. Watering can. Your good to go after that.

If Holidays didn't exist, would flower shops go outta buisiness?

Ex: Mohter's day , Valentine's day... commercial crap like dat!

If Holidays didn't exist, would flower shops go outta buisiness?
I think they'd have to sell something else besides flowers!! They better get a liquor license.. lmao.. You have funerals %26amp; weddings, that'll hold em over.. meow
Reply:No, because people like flowers!!
Reply:As long as people bite the dust...no worries. And funerals are wayyyyy over priced these days. Who can afford to die?
Reply:Don't worry. Plenty of people die and funerals are full of flowers
Reply:Nope, they'd still be doing fine. There's always guys and there's always girls. Meaning there's always going to be guys buying flowers for girls. No matter what the calendar says.
Reply:no b/c we'll still have birthdays and anniversaries etc

What will be the ethical code and rules for a flower shop?

Although I don't know if you're looking into opening up a floral shop (nor do I own a floral shop), I would presume that the general ethical code of professional conduct should be similar to those of most retail shops. You should start with a formal statement that summarizes your organization's core values on various ethical or social issues. Then make a list of what those issues are and specific procedures (such as verbal counseling, written counseling, how many times of verbal counseling before progressing to written, how many times of written counseling before progressing to employment suspension and ultimately, employment termination) on how to handle them, such as:

1. The definition of "quality" (for your products/services, the work environment setting, and the employees professional dress code).

2. Guidelines on how to determine if someone has violated a policy and what kind of corrective actions should be imposed.

3. Employment equality (gender, ethnic, religious beliefs, employees' equal number of sick hours and/or paid vacations, health insurance packages, etc) and mutual respect (what constitutes as "verbal assault" and "physical assault"; what type of language manner is unprofessional and should not be used with each other or with clients; etc).

4. What is the definition of "conflict of interest" (leaking company's confidential information), what circumstances constitute "conflict of interest," such as "acceptance of gifts."

5. Sexual harassment issues, policies, and procedure on how employees should report it, what kind of repercussions can result. (What constitutes as sexual harassment?)

6. Drug and alcohol usage right before or during job duties.

7. Attendance issues (what's acceptable and fair, your definition of "excessive absence," and how this "excess" can become unfair to other employees to take on the absentee's job duties).

8. Most of all, have an "Absolute No Retaliation" policy for those "counseled" or "suspended" or "terminated" employees to seek revenge on you, the owner/boss, or against other co-workers who reported them.

9. The details to Leave of Absence (LOA) and Family Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA) and Maternity Leave details (how long must an permenant-status employee must work before entitlement).

10. Research any additional laws, such as minimum wage requirements and Overtime Premium Pay requirements. Check out this site for the detailed Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA):

Hope this helps to narrow the topic down a bit.

Where can i find a flower shop online that sends the flowers to a person that are fresh?
1800flowers.com - I've used them a few times and they're good. Also, you can try ediblearrangements.com if you want to do a fruit arrangement that's more unique, and really tasty!
Reply:They only place online that I have purchased from and trust is 1800online
Reply:1800flowers.com is popular. You can call them also. 1800flowers = 1-800-356-9377.
Reply:FlowersAre Us.com

You can order boxed fresh roses, flowers, candy, bouquets, as well as professional floral arrangements for the holidays and all occasions.
Reply:Companies like 1800flowers, ftd, teleflora, and even your local florists DO NOT send fresh flowers. Their flowers have been sitting around in storage coolers for days and will wilt quickly.

Only a few companies send "fresh" flowers ie. hand-picked, direct from the grower, grower-fresh (look for these terms when ordering)

My favorite is (I've used them for years and always recommend them):

http://www.order-flowers-delivery.com/

and I hear proflowers.com is good/fresh as well, but i've read some reviews that say sometimes their flowers aren't "direct from the grower" either.
Reply:Click this link for several places that will send flowers for you:

Reply:proflowers sends flowers directly from the growers to the recipient. my mom has recieved flowers from them several times and they have been great. Once the flowers got overheated during delivery (it was 100 degrees the day they were delivered) they completely replaced them and were very helpful.

How do you get free flowers from floral shops?

I go to a very small and poorly funded charter school, and we want to sell flowers on valentines day to help raise money for a school prom or social. I have heard of people getting free flowers from floral shops when they toss the flowers that never sold. Do they still do that and how I would I go about getting donated flowers from floral shops?

How do you get free flowers from floral shops?
try approaching a local floral shop that will help by providing flowers for you to sell. They may give them to you at a discounted rate wherein you can sell them plus your markup and you keep the profit. You can upsell their business in your school newsletter or similar activity that will provide a little incentive for them to jumjp on board.
Reply:possibly by advertising the flower shop at your school they will give you some.

Some might give you some that are about to die, but very rarely especially with V-day coming up so soon.

How can I make my flower shop do better?

You need a business strategy. Find a serviceable niche and exploit it - a high end contract with local 5-Star hotels to decorate their lobbies and provide arrangements for guest rooms; street vendors for traffic lights when businessmen/women are driving home; satellite shops in hospitals; differential pricing during holidays; special delivery service; Internet ordering; etc.

How can I make my flower shop do better?
You need a second interest to draw people. You might try selling other small items on the side, like a few antiques. Or try having a consignment shop where people bring in crafts. Usually people like to go to a shop with more than one kind of thing to browse through. I went to a little tea shop once and ended up in another section where they had antiques and boy did I have fun. So not only did I have tea and a piece of pie, but also bought a flower vase. There is also a restaurant up here where I live, and in order to get to the tables you have to walk through all sorts of really great buys.
Reply:Lots of advertising especially when the special occasions come like mothers day. Maybe you can put some arrangements for dysplay. Big banners are good to.

When getting a corsage can u just go to a flower shop and get one made in a day?

Or does it have to be ahead of time.

When getting a corsage can u just go to a flower shop and get one made in a day?
Well. I am sure that you could have one made up the same day, but you might not get to choose from a large selection of flowers. If you order ahead, you probably have many more options.
Reply:Yes. Especially this time of year corsages are in high demand, but also should be in stock for instant sale. this is prom season and we are heading into June Wedding season. Nothing else comes close for corsage sales.

Go for it, and if you really want to score big time get a gardenia, fantastic aroma and less expensive but more desirable than an orchid.
Reply:You should order ahead of time for two reasons.

One. We can "make" a corsage in less than 10 min. That's not the problem. The problem is that we may not have the exact flower you want.

Two. To make a corsage for a walk-in customer, a florist would have to interrupt whatever they might be doing. In a slow day, that's fine. But we won't be able to do that, if we happen to be working on time-sensitive orders such as funerals.

It's ALWAYS better to plan ahead, not just for a corsage, but for any floral orders.

Is there a flower shop that can deliver to your door and you can pay at the door?

Im 14 and me and my sister (11) are looking for flowers for our mom on mothers day. On the internet we have to use credit cards and since were not old enough we dont have cards yet....and we can't go out to get flowers without blowing the cover. ( We want to suprise our mom ) I'm looking for a place that delivers flowers to our front door and we just pay with cash. Any recomendations? thanks :D

Is there a flower shop that can deliver to your door and you can pay at the door?
I suggest that you select a flower shop near where you live and either phone them or walk to their office. If you phone them, ask them if they can comply with your request. If you can walk there, you can pay to have the flowers delivered.
Reply:if you have relatives such as uncles, aunts, call them to help you suprise your Mom and you will pay cash to them later

Hutchinson, Minn. any flower shops open yet? around 50 Miles radius.?

Somebody in trouble??LOL Just kiddin':) Get out the phone book and check the yellow pages under "Florists". If you have a Wal-Mart Super Center around~and I'm sure there are probably 3 or 4 in a 50 mile radius~They have some really pretty fresh flowers, including roses by the dozen, and the prices are GREAT! Pick up a nice vase there too, put on a pretty ribbon, and nobody will know you didn't go to the florist:)

Good Luck!!

I would like to start my own flower shop business?

I am a female 52yrs. old don't have much money to work with but am knowledgeable about flowers. Never had my own business thought maybe a small business loan. But how to get it and how to qualify is a problem. Don't know how to go about it. Also what would I need to get it going. Coolers etc. I have a place to rent. Any info is greatly appreciated. Any women out there ever done the same thing????

I would like to start my own flower shop business?
Ok, great idea but here are your hurdles honey.

To get the loan, one you must either have an educational background that says you have the potential to do this, VERY pertinent and extended experience in the field and a superb credit history with a FICO score of over 700.

To make it in the biz and not have to worry about making the loan payments and going into bankruptcy, you must find a place that is either devoid of such a service or offer a product that hardly anyone else, if no one at ALL, can offer.

There is a flower shop on every corner...what would make your's special? That is what will be asked of you ok? Simply supplying the area with fresh long-stemmed roses and lilacs and Valentine's Day arrangenments will NOT be enough to persuade a bank to loan you $100K or more to get started.

You need to be able to make floral arrangements no one has EVER seen. What you need to get going is money and experience and know how. If all you want to do is make pretty floral arrangements, honey anyone can do that. You need to offer something that is rare, hard to find...singing telegrams...hokey, but when was the last time you ever head one being delivered? Something, if you REALLY want to make it...you can't be a blend in. You won't make it and a bank won't give you the loan. If you can do something spectacular, bring it with you to the loan interview...that way you can be like "see?!"...wow them.
Reply:The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal %26amp; Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Reply:To get the 'feel' of the floral business, you might consider going to work in one. I am sure it will give you an 'inside' perspective.Try contacting SCORE.
Reply:you should try. start with a rent in a local, busy plaza, and use personal money (and from family and friends) to pay for shipment and the flowers. if you still can't, start by working in a flower store and learn how they do it.
Reply:good luck....
Reply:Great idea! In my opinion, you can't go wrong. Low overhead, should be able to get flowers locally or discounted due to the fact that you'll be buying in bulk. I'm sure there are plenty of places on the web that'll get you the vases and paper products you'll need at a reduced price. Cards and other nic naks can be bought at Wal-mart online. Go for it. You'll never know how successful you can be unless you try!
Reply:Look..respecting your age,i must say..good decision..u wanna qualify for the loan..just go ahead and mortgage your property..some legal formalities are there which any good bank will help you to comply with.dont worry about it..for flower shop business your expirience would be good enough but u need some assistant who has previously worked in the same line.u hv good knowledge but the latest trends in bouqets, glitterings %26amp; all that stuff..he will arrange everything of your use..so,march forward with your decision..dont be hesitant..jst beleive in yourself and success will be yours.good luck..

Mother's Day is nothing but a pre-fabricated invention by capitalist card companies and flower shops. Right?

Were you born or did you just climb out of a test tube one day. Go to your dictionary and look up two words: love, and compassion. Then, get some therapy.

Mother's Day is nothing but a pre-fabricated invention by capitalist card companies and flower shops. Right?
Wrong.
Reply:Mother's Day is a day to show appreciation to our mothers for all they have done.
Reply:No Mothers Day is all about your mom and thanking her for what she has done for you..Like bringing you into this world..Celebrate your mom
Reply:I think it's a double edged weapon!

Why bring sadness to those who never knew their moms?!

Beside, it might make some try to remake their relations with their moms again!
Reply:Maybe, but I think it's nice to recognize Mothers, as well as Fathers on Father's Day.
Reply:And long distance telephone companies. More long distance phone calls are made on that day in the US than any other day. It is a money-making ploy, yes, but won't your Mom be sad if you don't tell her you love her on that day even though I'm sure you tell her you love her on other days as well?
Reply:It may be, but I want to see you try and not get your mother anything and see what happens!!
Reply:no buddy i guess your not a mom and i hope you have fifty just like you.
Reply:RIGHT i always hated it as it makes no sense
Reply:No, it's a pagan holiday celebrated who worshipped the cult of mother. The capitalist took and of course made it into a money maker. Just like every other holiday, think about Easter - what do rabbits and eggs have to do with Christ's resurrection. I mean rabbits don't lay eggs they give birth.
Reply:No - that's Valentine's day. Mother's Day was a pre-fabricated by suburban mother's clubs. But of all the lame-***, pointless "holidays" out ther, I don't see thr crime in buying my mom a gift.
Reply:Anna Jarvis, in 1890, was the power behind the official establishment of Mother's Day

* swore at her mother's gravesite in 1905 to dedicate her life to her mother's project, and establish a Mother's Day to honor mothers, living and dead

* a persistent rumor is that Anna's grief was intensified because she and her mother had quarreled and her mother died before they could reconcile

# Anna Jarvis was able to enlist the World's Sunday School Association in the lobbying campaign, a key success factor in convincing legislators in states and in the U.S. Congress to support the holiday

# 1912: West Virginia became the first state to adopt an official Mother's Day

# 1914: the U.S. Congress passed a Joint Resolution, and President Woodrow Wilson signed it, establishing Mother's Day, emphasizing women's role in the family (not as activists in the public arena, as Howe's Mother's Day had been)

# Texas Senators Cotton Tom Heflin and Morris Shepard introduced the joint resolution adopted in 1914. Both were ardent prohibitionists.

# Anna Jarvis became increasingly concerned over the commercialization of Mother's Day: "I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit." She opposed the selling of flowers (see below) and also the use of greeting cards: "a poor excuse for the letter you are too lazy to write."

# 1923: Anna Jarvis filed suit against New York Governor Al Smith, over a Mother's Day celebration; when a court threw the suit out, she began a public protest and was arrested for disturbing the peace

# 1931: Anna Jarvis criticized Eleanor Roosevelt for her work with a Mother's Day committee that was not Jarvis' committee

# Anna Jarvis never had children of her own. She died in 1948, blind and penniless, and was buried next to her mother in a cemetery in the Philadelphia area.

n the end, shortly before her death, Anna Jarvis told a reporter that she was sorry she ever started Mother's Day.
Reply:WROOONG! MOTHER,S DAY IS HER SPECIAL DAY. SHE GETS TO DO WHAT SHE WANTS. AS SHE CATERS TO YOU THE REST OF THE YEAR. AT LEAST GIVE HER THAT MUCH RESPECT. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CARD COMPANIES OR FLOWER SHOPS.
Reply:Whoever made it, whatever the reason is, it is still worth making one day in a year to remember all the mothers in the world. For the good job they have done.
Reply:who cares if it is. it's only one day to celebrate the women who brought you into this world. when can atleast give them that
Reply:Wrong!

While many people might assume that Mother's Day is a holiday invented by the fine folks at Hallmark, it's not so. The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece, honoring Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. The Romans called their version of the event the Hilaria, and celebrated on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele, the mother of the Gods. Early Christians celebrated the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ.

In more recent times, relatively speaking -- England in the 1600s--the celebration was expanded to include all mothers with "Mothering Sunday" being celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter).
Reply:Its true that it was made up...but cant you give your mom one freaking day? i mean you dropped out of school and started working at micky d's...cant you just give her one day of being happy after 364 days of seeing her offspring fail at life? i mean come on!
Reply:it is a twisted spiral....

i mean why only one selected day to show her that you care, eh??

you can tell her anyday, then why wait for 364 days to fly by just to say that she's important to you....
Reply:right! And as a mother, i don´t want to be celebrated just this day. I am a mother every day and not just on thet second sunday in may.

I know someone who operates a flower shop from a home shes renting?
In most places, you need a business license and often it is a violation of zoning codes to operate a retail business in a residential zone. An LLC is not usually necessary for a business like that.

How to let purple Calla Lily flower grows again with color ?
I just received a calla for my anniversary. The green growth is probably new flowers. Actually , callas are outside plants. If you are lucky and depending on where you live, if you plant it outside, it may come back next year. I have never grown one inside. They grow from corms, which is similiar to a bulb. I worked in a flower shop for years.Good luck. oh, as long as it is blooming, I would cut the blooms and put them in a vase. Very little water or they will drown due to hollow stems. 2inches per 5 blooms. This also sigmals the plant to keep in blooming for awhile. The flowers can last up to two weeks in water!
Reply:More artificial light and longer hour can't help you.
Reply:You can't. The bulb is done. Retire it, and wait for the next blossoming cycle.

How can I naturally get rid of whitefly at my flower shop?

Whiteflies feed on the fungus that grows in over-damp soil and potting medium. They're unsightly, and we don't want them in our retail spaces, but they do not damage any plants. Let the plants dry well before the next watering. Good air circulation helps, as it causes the soil to dry faster than it would otherwise. If you have a place where you can set the plants out of your retail space for a day or two and get the staff to stop watering unless the plants are actually dry, the whiteflies will no longer be a problem. Have the staff in charge of watering put a finger in the soil of the plants which seem to be harboring the flies and see if the soil is wet. If so, do not water!

How can I naturally get rid of whitefly at my flower shop?
Mild solution of Washing up liquid with water spray all over.
Reply:Leave a shallow bowl of vinegar out.
Reply:MArigolds are supposed to repel them. I have filled the entrance to the greenhouse with them this year and had much less of a problem than normal.
Reply:Try a couple rounds of fly paper it's sold at stores like Wal-mart and Target ,and it won't do any harm to any of your plants.

Lilies and roses are too distant to hybridize. How about "prairie gentian", Eustoma grandiflorum, aka Lisianthus russellianus?

Reply:I think it depends on the vibe of your shop and how you want people to perceive it. SPRING FLING would be a great name for a shop that was full of flirty flowers and cutesy arrangements. DOWN TO EARTH would be a great name for a more naturalistic and organic florist that sold more flowering plants than bouquets of daisys. I think the first thing you should do is look at where the shop is and who will be shopping there. Creating a vibe that is too young or too old, too stodgy or too chic for the people you will be selling to will not serve either of you very well. Look around your neighborhood and your heart and I'm sure you will see what the shop wants to be and the name will come to you. Good luck!

You pay the fee to be part of their franchise. I am surprised they do not send you junk mail already.

This would be for direct mail. I'm willing to pay up to $0.50 per address.

I would like to promote my product via direct mail to flower shop. How can I get a mailing list?
Start simple. Go to www.mapquest.com, put in your area, and get a map... then look for a link that says something like, "find nearby businesses" Put in florists, and see what you get.

Those are free and you can copy/paste them into a Word document for later use.

Also you can use the yellow pages. If they can afford those ads, they can afford your product.

Why pay for addresses when you can get a start for free??

If you do a Google search, you probably can find mailing lists, but those aren't very good because they generally are expensive and aren't "fresh."

very good site you do have to pay a fee but they could probably give you the option of addresses only.

How can someone start up a flower shop?

Do your homework first to be sure that there is a calling for that type of business in your area. Do you have an area picked out to rent space or have a building to use on your property and then have to make sure you can start a business on it thru the zoning board in your area. Decide how much money you have to put into it to start, check out wholesale places for flowers - you might talk to some flower shops in another city - they are always willing to talk about how they got into business and where to make contacts. It takes a lot of homework and leg work to research prices and exactly what you want and the scale you want to start on. Start out small and build it up . I use to raise and sell plants out of my home and had people calling about insects and all kinds of questions. I bought books and studied up and really started building a clientele that way but in my case I ended up moving and never did open one but I had really thought about it. It is exciting and you can do it with a lot of work and dedication! Decide what you have to charge according to what you have paid for flowers and plants so that you make a little profit to start and the better you get and more people you get buying flowers then you can increase inventory and prices.

How can someone start up a flower shop?
Ask somebody in that line of business.

If I want to be a Florist and wish to own my own Flower Shop what are some things I have to do?

Like I'm not really sure. No one in my family knows about this. My mom and grandma can barely keep a plant alive! LOL But do I study Botany? Like what should I do? I have every intention on going to the University. Is that what I study? And if I want to open my own shop do I have to study Buisiness? Please help. I'd really love to do this.

If I want to be a Florist and wish to own my own Flower Shop what are some things I have to do?
If you plan on opening/owning your own shop, obviously you need to acquire some money - it's not a cheap business. I've worked for about 7 years in the business, as a designer (but not owned a shop) Best to either go to school for it - usually less than a year) but if you choose that route, add in some business courses that will also help you run the business. You can also apprentice with a local shop and learn it from the ground up. In a lot of ways this to me would be the best route as long as the florist you apprentice under has a good grasp of design and is up to date on the current styles of the day. Learn the basics - try it out as a job to make sure you will like it and then learn every darned thing you can. Develop your own style - or I should say learn to give your floral designs your own touch. One thing, floral design is not all simple nor do you stand around taking your time, designing each arrangement. The holidays are BUSY!! You will also more than likely be doing some funeral work too - weddings are fun but can be a pain in the you know what when the bride changes her mind a 100 times LOL Not only that, you will be cleaning the flowers as they come in, getting them into buckets of water, tossing out the dead (and sometimes incredibly stinky) ones and sweeping up after the mess you make as you design. I think one of the hardest things is to have someone come in and want an arrangement immediately and they're outside tapping their toes waiting for the arrangement and you have to rush thru the arrangement and still do a great job. or to take orders for the family of someone that is deceased - for the funeral.

Basically go to your local florist and get a job there - learn more about it and see if it is truly what you want to do. There's really a lot more than just putting flowers in a vase to being a florist LOL Then if you like it - learn learn learn and save save save - then open your own shop!!
Reply:First of all you need to know about Business %26amp; having a flair for floral design helps-so have you got natural flair?, because this is half the battle!,now if you are in it for the money then this is the wrong reason to become a florist as you will be competing with supermarkets, flower stalls , freelancers, %26amp; of course other florist shops.

If you can afford to buy a business that is already making a coin then do it, setting up from scratch can be a financial nightmare.

Im sure that if you offered some of your time -Voulentry to a well known florist shop for the experiance, maybe a few hours a week then that would be worth more than money %26amp; also give you some contacts in the industry plus they may give you a reference which would help out big time when you apply for a position in a shop at some stage.

I was gifted earlier on in my life with the flair but never took advantage of it %26amp; the people around me saw my talent but never incoraged me when I needed it the most.

So now im a Garden manager dont get me wrong I love my vocation, but if I had the chance all over again I would have gone to florist school %26amp; worked for some big names in the business %26amp; then travelled the world %26amp; echted my name in floral history.

Good luck I hope you succed!
Reply:You can get an degree in botany and an MBA ...ORRR..you can work at a florist shop and pay really close attention and ask plenty of questions and learn the business for a few years, maybe while taking some night classes in business. That second one is the cheaper - and to be honest - more accurate way to do it, because if you want to run a business, you should be able to work it!
Reply:go to the gardens of wildrow wilsons latest home and pick only one pink gardenia and bring it to your home and care for it. If it dies within 362 minutes then you have failed. If it survives take the living gardenia to your designated shop and sell it, you will soon be a millinaire

How long does it usually take for a flower shop to make a crosage and a boutineer? (sp?)?

my prom is this saturday, and my bf and i havent ordered a crosage or a boutineer yet. should i be worried? or will they be able to make it in time?

How long does it usually take for a flower shop to make a crosage and a boutineer? (sp?)?
They can make them fast but I am sure they are extremely busy this time of the year so I would go ahead and get them ordered.
Reply:They can make them up in a couple of hours, IF they have the flowers!!! By ordering them several days ahead of time, you will be able to get the flowers and colors that you want. Order them tomorrow!!!

Good Luck!!
Reply:Your better flower shops are aware of prom dates and make a special effort to have all supplies on hand.

It does not take long at all (matter of minutes ) to make a corsage or boutineer. It depends a lot on how many orders they have ahead of yours.

You should be O.K. if you order now.
Reply:I am a floral designer, and it typically takes me 15 minutes to do the set, so there shouldn't be any issue there, we get all our corsages made by that Friday afternoon, except for real delicate stuff. We took orders up to the day of prom, but big shops sometimes stop taking them a week before. Anyways, you should be able to get a set, but there's a chance you won't get exactly what you want, since they may not have time to get a specific flower, so you may have to settle for something basic like white that will match anything. So I would call around, and see what they can offer you... Good luck!

How can I start up a flower shop business?
The "how" is the easy part, being successful is another story.

First you must do lots of planning and preparation that includes

contacts with many suppliers so that you will be able to get what you need when you need it.Next, get you liscense, and your DBA, (Doing Bussiness As). Now find a building in a good location. Try to pick a location that has very few if any bussinesses of the same type, and has lots of potential customers. From there, it is a matter of stocking the correct flowers for you intended customers,.

This is of course a simplistic explanation, but is the basic process. The most important part is researching potential clientel

If you are in the UK, I would look into florestry courses and also business courses which would help you run your own business. You will also need a business plan and capital.
Reply:Botany major at a university or just a management degree or some type of business degree and then work in a flower shop to move your way up. See if you can intern while in school for credit too. You can see if there are any college that offer an associates degree (2 years) in business management if the traditional four year is too long.
Reply:NVQ's at your local college or adult education centre is best.

Reply:Look in your local yellow pages for Floral Design School (most of them are private, taught by a florist that've been in the business for ages). Depending on the school. Mine was taught 3 nights/week, 3hour/nights for 3 months. Your will be taught the size of the ribbons, wires, type of vases, baskets.....learn how to tie diff. kind of bows....flowers name.....greens......etc. I was practicing dry/fresh flowers arrangements every night at school. When graduated she'll give you a certificate. You can look for a job in any flower shop after that. Note: during study, if you show her your potential...she might recommended you to the local flower shops that she has connected with for a part time job....you'll get experience that way....But it's still a long way to open up your own shop....Good luck.
Reply:Take a few ornamental horticulture classes at a community college, I did this in High School and it is harder than you may think but it is fun to be that creative and with out that type of knowledge the store may not go very far.
Reply:YEARS AGO I ASKED MY FLORIST WHERE SHE WENT TO SCHOOL TO LEARN HER BUSINESS. SHE WENT TO A SCHOOL IN MINNEAPOLIS AND THERE ARE PROBABLY OTHER LOCATIONS. HERS WAS A 1 OR 2 YEAR COURSE WHICH INCLUDED THE BUSINESS ASPECT OF OWNING YOUR OWN FLORAL SHOP. GOOD LUCK!
Reply:Get an apprentice job at a local flower shop. You'll learn how to clean and care for flowers and plants first before you can learn how to make bouquets. You might be asked to clean buckets, answer phones, make bows, clean floors and other routine tasks that floral shops have to do everyday. By doing that, you would be able to gauge if you are really inclined to open your own flower shop. Local florists are going by the wayside because of internet floral gatherers, do you think you can compete with these internet businesses that are well financed? If you have a considerable amount of money to start your own floral shop business, you might want to buy an existing flower shop with existing accounts, and hopefully you have a marketing background to be able to market it. Good luck!

In zone 5, US, can I put gloxinias outside in the flower bed and have them live as a perennial?

Know they are related to African Violets, so would think the answer would be NO, but was told differently by a flower shop.

In zone 5, US, can I put gloxinias outside in the flower bed and have them live as a perennial?
You're doing the right thing to double check on a fragile flower. I'm aware of one Gloxinia (Hardy Gloxinia, Incarvillea delavayi) that is hardy to Zone 6, but I'm not aware of any that are hardy to Zone 5.
Reply:You can overwinter gloxinias IF you treat them as roses; get a rose cone and mulch around the base.

You'll have better luck if the plant is very near the foundation of the house where the soil does not freeze as solidly.
Reply:There is a hardy perennial gloxinia that you can grow outside, but not the one in the florist shop. They gave you misinformation. Check it out:

Please tell me which name u like best for my new flower shop?

the names we currently have are

Bella Fiore (which means beautiful flower)

Fiore Della Vita Florist (flower of life) and

Ba-da BLOOM Florist

I am still taking suggestions if you have one to add, but these seem to be the favs.

The name must appeal to all ages and all occassions, weddings and funerals.

Any feedback will be appreciated. TIA!

Please tell me which name u like best for my new flower shop?
Bella Fiore is a beautiful name.

Fiore Della Vita Florist - too long and hard to remember

Ba-da BLOOM - funny, but might not be taken seriously

Other options:

Bella Blooms (combine Italian and English)

Bella Blossoms

Ciao Bella Blooms or Ciao Bella Blossoms (I love the word Ciao since it could mean "Hello" or "Goodbye", and who does'nt like to hear "Hello, beautiful"?

Amore Fiore or Fiore Amore

Flore Pleno (A botanical term describing a flower with extra petals)

Add the name of your neighborhood if it sounds good.
Reply:Bella Fiore sounds like a pretty, and upscale place. Where you would get ellagant flowers.

#2 is too muhc of a tongue twister

#3 is fun, it sounds more like a "every day person" flowershop. You would think the flowers would be resonable priced, if that makes sense. haha

I like #1, but #3 sticks in your head... which is kind of what you want. You want people to remember your store.

EDIT Ps... I'm not sure how things work where you are, but make sure East Side Mario's doenst have any claim on the Saying in any sense. Like toysRus... the kids store (not sure if they have them where you are..) but they have the legal rights to the backwards "R" in their name... so check that out if you decide to go with #3
Reply:I like Bella Fiore. It is classy and has a name that will appeal to many different age groups. Ba-da BLOOM is cute and would be great if you specialized in a quirky, fun stlye of arrangements. However, I would not order my funeral flowers from there.

Happy wedding anniversary.

A friend who owns a flower shop died yesterday. Where do I get the funeral arrangement?

I been buying flowers every saturday from this local family owned flower shop for the past fifteen years or so. Throughout the course of my purchasing at the flower shop the owner and I have became close friends. She passed away yesterday. Should I send a funeral arrangement from their own shop or from another? Let's face it, people notice these things even in times of mourning. You may ask yourself, Don't you think they'll be too busy planning the funeral to be worried about your stupid arrangement? They have workers, other than the immediate family that assist in putting the arrangements together. I'm in a pickle!

A friend who owns a flower shop died yesterday. Where do I get the funeral arrangement?
That really is a tough one, because you don't know which way the family will feel about it. Either they'll be too worried or hassled or feel that you're unsympathetic if you order from them, yet if you order from somewhere else, you're giving another business money and they may feel insulted that for the one time you're buying FOR them, you didn't get it FROM them.

Honestly, I think the former is much more likely. Get it from somewhere else, because they may just feel extra pressure in a time of mourning to make a flower arrangement for THEMSELVES. Ask a friend who lives nearby where they usually get flowers, and if it's a good place.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Feel better and good luck!

I am the owner of a family run flower shop. I need to find florists very quickly, where should I turn?

The thing is that I have the flower shop in Miami, Florida. And we get most of our florists by word of mouth. Because of some changes in the business, we have lost some florists. I have been looking everywhere looking to find quality florists, but no luck. Is there perhaps a website that I can post info on and will get noticed? I was hoping to do this at cost effectively as possible. Thank you very much.

Why don't flower shops sell or promote at all, the sale of single flowers ? They could increase total sales...

This would be 'extra' business, analagous to donut shops selling donut holes, which is something that wasn't done 25 years ago.

They could probably sell on a 200 percent profit margin, and frugal husbands could really stoke the home fires.

Otherwise, men who don't want to spend $95 for a dozen long stemmed red roses just stay away, and put nothing in their cash registers, and potential foot traffic / customer goodwill is lost.

Am I missing something here ?

Why don't flower shops sell or promote at all, the sale of single flowers ? They could increase total sales...
Well, flowers are like loaves bread...in N. American, it doesn't work to sell things in bits and pieces because of 1- the cost of doing business and 2- scarcity (due to climate). Most flowers in the U.S. are cut fresh and flown in daily from Latin America. To sell one-sies in flowers, a seller would have to be willing to take a huge loss, since it's not like there are local flower farms (like in Mexico) where he/she can just go get more. And, there's no guarantee that selling one-sies is going to increase traffic.

The flowers go bad and where does that leave the flower seller?

In other countries (pejoratively known as the third world), selling things in small quantities is very common because the cost of doing business is alot cheaper and things like flowers, fresh produce and the like are in abundance.

Also, you can't compare donuts to flowers because donuts are manufactured within the US, less expensive to distribute.

How can I improve my flower shops income?

ouch, my girl friend owned one--the only real thing i can think of -is contact churches and give discount for events such as weddings ---and you might even do sunday service arrangments for just at cost -with delivery --to show ur talent and promote and even use flowers that might need to be moved out-but remember it will be your chance 2 sell yourself-maybe even pass out flyers in the neighborhoods for your personal attention and a discount for any big event arrangments -from funerals to weddings and all between--and i remember stealing alot of shrubbery around the shop-shhhhhhhhhh but my friend could make crab grass look like the lastest trend -good look pal

Reply:with controling your money (money managment) %26amp; decrease your costs.
Reply:You need to get agressive with self promotion. Advertise more often and make sure you contact any company that is involved with weddings, especially wedding planners and companies that do bridal shows.
Reply:One idea is to contact the elementary and high schools in your area and ask them when their fundraisers are. Then donate a small arrangement of flowers. In my area the flower shops have sandwich boards in front of their stores that advertise roses for sale at very low prices. Some use people dressed up in costumes who carry signs on the street corner to promote interest. I think that this is one of those businesses that take a while to build up. Most people don't treat flowers as a necessity.

Know of any reliable online wholesale or bulk flower shops?

A "true" wholesaler will not sell to the public. They request your retailers license number before the sale. Wholesale used in advertising to the public, is a good indicator you are about to be ripped off. You may find savings if buying large amounts in bulk but the shipping may eat that up.

Do flower shops deliver to cemeteries?

My mom died about a month ago but I am in Sc and she was burried in IL. How can I get flowers to her grave for mothers day?

Do flower shops deliver to cemeteries?
Your best bet would be to check yellow pages.com for a locally owned flower shop. The big name flower shops often have set rules whereas the little "mom and pop" ones will work with you. I have also found that smaller flower shops=better customer service. It might be best not to let on that you are from out of state as someone dishonest might see that as an opportunity to take your money and not deliver the flowers.

By the way, sorry to hear about your loss. God Bless!
Reply:surely there's a friend or relative near her in IL that would do the favor for you.... if you don't know anyone, call the funeral home that took care of her and see if there's someone registered there, perhaps who paid for the funeral, that you can call..... there's a way, honey... you just have to figger it out.... but don't just call a florist and pay them and think they won't just take your money..... it's happened to me... I'm in NC and my mom's in WVa.....my biggest hug to you... and my most heartfelt sympathies....
Reply:yes they do. Sorry for your loss. I agree though, try to call a local florist where she was buried. You can also check your local florist, they might be able to make arrangements with another florist where your mom was buried. Good luck.
Reply:I think they will. You should call them and ask.
Reply:I wouldn't count on it if your from out of state and they know it.

Does anyone know any flower/ gift shops online, that will deliver to anywhere in the world?

My friend is staying in a hotel in Dubai over Valentine's day on business and I wanted to put something in his hotel room before he got there. Does anyone know of any gift or flower business/shops that are online that would deliver to that location? Something at a fairly reasonable price too. Thank you!

What do you look for in a flower shop? Where do flower shops strike a wrong chord with you? Are you uncomfort
I like flower shops just fine. All I ask, besides a fresh and varied selection, are helpful and knowledgeable staff. Nothing is more irritating than teenage counter staff chatting with each other and ignoring the customers.

Where can i buy a refrigerator with glass side by side doors, most often seen in flower shops/restauraunts?

you know those refrigerators with glass refrigerator doors we see at the flower shop or in restauraunt kitchens...where can i buy one...i live southern california, USA.

Where can i buy a refrigerator with glass side by side doors, most often seen in flower shops/restauraunts?
I know the company Sub Zero makes them with the compressors on top. Pricey!! I saw a few different models on the Sears website that had glass fronts in their commercial wares. You can also check at restaurant supply companies for new and used models in your area. Restaurants close and you may be able to get one at auction. Call the soda companies and see if you can get a deal on one that they have in stock. I love the look of the glass doors but am afraid that I would not want to see into my fridge all the time.
Reply:if theres a home depot, ive seen them there
Reply:You can try calling any local Refrigeration company or you may try going to the true website they offer what you are looking for. Good luck
Reply:Find a used restaurant equipment store. They usually have a bunch of them. You can also find them on eBay.

Why is costco, trader joe's,1-800 flowers, and large corporations trying to overshadow flower shops?

I don't understand why large corporations take advantage of small businesses, all those online "florists" like pro-flowers, blooms.net and 1-800 flowers, rip people off.

I ordered a large arrangement from 1-800 flowers and I didn't get the best quality in flowers, I would rather order from a local flower shop now, especiall y those that are family owned.

they give you the best service and products it was worthe the money, pricey, but worth every penny. I still don't understand why some people are still dumb enough to support those large corporations that have no knowledge or passion like a REAL flower shop does. Is it because small flower shops don't have enough money to advertise like large corporations do?

Why is costco, trader joe's,1-800 flowers, and large corporations trying to overshadow flower shops?
It's called capitalism. Get used to it because it's not going anywhere any time soon.

How can I get flower shops to buy my hand crafted greetings cards?

I have been making calls to flower shops but they all say they have got their own range already... My cards are selling very well at one shop already so I'm ready to expand. Any ideas?

Your advice would be much appreciated.

How can I get flower shops to buy my hand crafted greetings cards?
Hello Liz. These are tough times, have you ever offered to leave a collection of greeting cards on consignment? Leave your cards at a selection of shops and then return periodically, cards which are sold are paid for - you then have the option of either leaving the remaining cards or taking them back - you should also replace the sold cards with identical cards already sold. Leaving merchandise on consignment is a great idea because it avoids the initial investment on behalf of the shop owner and lets be honest your creations have a better chance of being sold if they're on display rather than if they're stored in a box somewhere waiting to be bought. Good luck and I sure hope you sell sell sell!!
Reply:You need to set up an attractive display of your cards. That means you wil have to invest in some small displays - look on internet under card displays. Then you go into each store PERSONALLY so you can present your display and speak 1-1 to owner. Try to go in early in am before they get busy and definately long before a holiday. Show a few cards and tell them that they are selling well in XYZ store and you would like to provide them with the opportunity to offer the cards also.

REMEMBER- everyone wants to be unique. If you offered same cards to competetion a block down the street, then this store won't be interested. Offer to provide unique cards for them (sure there will be some duplicates but for the most part - they get unique cards). You can duplicate in another town, or on opposite sides of town, but not in same area - get it?

Next - the $ part. You will have a much higher chance of them saying yes if you put the card display in the store on consignment. That way the store has no $outlay or risk to try your cards. Be sure you know exactly how many cards are there. Then go by on a weekly or monthly basis and refresh the display (depending on need). At that point, charge them for what they sold. This is a classic method of selling in a retail store and is very successful for small vendors. Most of the items in a convenience store are sold this way.

If they still say no or seem unsure, offer a few free samples to try. They key is to offer the store no/low risk to try your product. If your cards are good, they will sell themselves and the rest of the issues will dissolve.

ALso, you should consider event planners and such who make use of cards - small gift shops, baby stores, hospital gift shops, etc. Be creative! Good luck
Reply:send samples of the cards yourself to the identified shops and ask them to try it for a week or two. if it does not sell you will go back for it. I am sure by the end of the week the card will be sold.
